Before a workout
- Open HeartZone Coach and complete onboarding.
- Grant Health access for heart-rate reading and workout saving.
- Grant Location access for outdoor distance, pace, and route maps, and Motion & Fitness access for iPhone steps, cadence, and indoor estimated distance.
- Select Run or Walk, Outdoor or Indoor, and your target heart-rate zone.
- For Outdoor, start with a clear view of the sky and wait for GPS quality to improve if the app reports a weak signal. For Indoor, keep the iPhone in a pocket or another position that moves naturally with you.
Common questions
Why is heart rate unavailable?
HeartZone Coach reads heart rate through Apple Health during an active workout. Confirm Health permission is enabled and that a compatible heart-rate source is recording to Apple Health.
Why are pace or distance unavailable?
For Outdoor workouts, confirm Location access is enabled. GPS accuracy can be reduced near tall buildings, dense trees, tunnels, or other obstructions.
For Indoor workouts, confirm Motion & Fitness access and carry the iPhone so it moves with your stride. Indoor distance is a pedometer estimate and can differ from the treadmill display.
How do I change distance units?
Open HeartZone Coach Settings and select Distance Units. Automatic, the default, follows the measurement system selected by your iPhone Region. You can instead choose Kilometers or Miles explicitly.
The selection applies to distance, pace, workout history, voice coaching, and Live Activities. Saved workout distance remains unchanged.
Why are steps or cadence unavailable?
Confirm Motion & Fitness access is enabled for HeartZone Coach and keep the iPhone with you while moving. Leaving the phone on a treadmill console may prevent it from detecting steps.
HeartZone Coach uses the iPhone pedometer. Public iOS APIs do not provide the app with an AirPods system step count.
Why does an older workout say “No route map”?
Workouts recorded before route maps were introduced, workouts recorded without usable GPS, and locationless workouts do not contain route data.
Where is my data stored?
Workout history, scalar step summaries, route maps, preferences, and diagnostics are stored locally on your iPhone. HeartZone Coach has no account or cloud-sync service.
How do I delete my data?
Use the cleanup controls in HeartZone Coach Settings to delete local workout history or diagnostics. Deleting the app removes its local app container. Workouts saved to Apple Health must be deleted separately in the Health app.
